1870s–1900s · The Boom
Largest Stockyard Between Nashville & Chattanooga
Webb School arrives in 1870. Population tops 1,000. Victorian homes and storefronts rise along Main Street.
1915–1950s · The Quiet Years
Automobiles & Decline
The car erodes rail commerce. Storefronts board up. General Patton's tank rolls through in 1940. The town grows quiet but resilient.
1960s · The Resurgence
Restoration Wave Begins
Artists and historians discover Bell Buckle's Victorian bones. Restoration purchases begin. The town starts to breathe again.
1976 · Recognition
National Register of Historic Places
During the Bicentennial, Bell Buckle's downtown and Webb School area earn National Register status. Official — and permanent.

Daffodils Bloom — A Town Tradition
Sawney Webb first planted daffodil bulbs along Webb Road. The Daffodil Day tradition has bloomed every March ever since.

First Bell Buckle Quilt Walk

2000 · Tree City USA
Smallest Tree City in Tennessee
Bell Buckle earns Tree City USA status — the smallest Tennessee town with the honor. Governor's Environmental Award follows in 2009.

Chapter 1
The Railroad Boom
When the Nashville & Chattanooga line came through in 1852, it didn't just bring trains — it brought prosperity. Bell Buckle grew into the largest livestock shipping point between the two cities. Victorian storefronts, churches, and fine homes rose along Main Street as the town's population surged past 1,000.
Chapter 2
The Victorian Homes
From Greek Revival to Victorian Queen Anne, Bell Buckle's residential architecture tells a century of prosperity. The Hoover Home (c. 1870) is the oldest surviving residence — once a funeral parlor, then a hotel. Walk the streets and see 40+ architecturally significant structures still standing today.
Chapter 3
Historic Preservation
The White House (1895) — now the charming Arrowlet B&B — was built by Dr. White, one of Bell Buckle's three town physicians. His daughter Bette White married a Mr. Davis… making her "Bette Davis." In 1976, the district earned National Register of Historic Places status.
Chapter 4
The Festival Tradition
From Daffodil Day each March to the RC Cola & Moon Pie Festival every June, Bell Buckle built a reputation as Tennessee's most spirited small town. The RC Cola festival draws 30,000+ visitors a year to a community of fewer than 600 residents — Southern quirkiness done right.

Railroad Square
Est. 1852
Once a sawmill, then a Victorian clothing store. Today home to Phillips General Store — still stocked with original Victorian-era goods.
Webb Cottage
Built 1868 · Oldest Home
The oldest surviving home in Bell Buckle. Temporary home of Sawney Webb himself. Featured in Country Kitchen Magazine, 2002.
Hoover / Strobel Home
Built c. 1870 · Greek Revival
The oldest standing residence in Bell Buckle. Once a funeral home, then the Lynch Hotel. Locals say it's haunted — current residents love it.
Bell Buckle Methodist Church
Est. 1875 · Rebuilt 1893
Founded by Sawney Webb and Rev. A.T. Crawford. The Nashville-gifted pipe organ has filled this sanctuary since 1932.
A.E. Fuggitt Home
Built 1880
Built by the family who donated land to found Bell Buckle. A Hungarian family fleeing WWII later purchased it and taught at Webb School.
Alison / Burl White Home
Late 1800s
Once home to noted country singer Burl White. A piece of Bell Buckle's musical heritage, tucked behind white picket fencing.
White House · Arrowlet B&B
Built 1895
Built by Dr. White, one of Bell Buckle's three town doctors. His daughter Bette White married a Mr. Davis — making her "Bette Davis."
Reagor Home
Built 1898 · Victorian Queen Anne
Classic Queen Anne style with stunning wrap-around porches. Purchased in 1940 for $2,000 by a widow raising four children — she made it sing.
John Hoover Home · Phone #1
Built 1898
First house in Bell Buckle with a telephone. His number was literally "#1." Known for its charming diamond-shaped gable windows.
Russ Faxon Studio
1800s · Survived a Fire
Once a saloon and feed mill across the tracks. The only building to survive a devastating late-1800s fire. Now home to world-renowned sculptor Russ Faxon.
Paty Home · "Flying Pig Manor"
Built 1914
Home of John Paty Sr. In the 1940s–60s it housed Webb School boarders. Still has the original hand pump and cistern. Named for a beloved garden pig.
Bank of Bell Buckle · Arts Center
c. 1900
In 1976 artist Anne White-Scruggs opened Bell Buckle Crafts here — sparking the arts-and-crafts identity that defines the town today.
Judge Pady / Hunt Home
Built 1890s
Home of one of Bell Buckle's most prominent early judges. Its classic Victorian lines and wide veranda have welcomed generations.
Whiteside / Russ Taff Home
Built 1905
Later home to Grammy-winning gospel singer Russ Taff. A beautiful early 20th-century residence bridging Bell Buckle's Victorian and modern eras.

Tucked right out front of the Bell Buckle Dump, our community garden turns an unlikely corner of town into the most generous patch of dirt in Bedford County. Neighbors plant it, neighbors tend it, and neighbors eat from it — that's the whole idea. Whether you've got a green thumb or just a hungry family, you're welcome here.
📍 Finding it: head for the Bell Buckle Dump — the garden beds are right out front.
If you can see the dump gate, you're there. Park along the drive and come say hi to the tomatoes.
